It comes right after the setup of You's injury. This was a bombing, or, more specifically, a firebombing. I did, however, specify that this was not an accident. I think I've given sufficient evidence for most of my point. Even she knows, though, that it's an illusion. Despite curling into a fetal position when they ride the bus, she still insists that everything is good. However You got injured, Lorde is lying to him, and most likely herself. Caressed your brain is not a minor injury. Lorde's lying to somebody, and she and You are the only people. Combine this with but I live in a hologram with you, since they're similar. Here's where Buzzcut Season's real meaning comes through. This could reasonably be a line about growing older and leaving home, if it was in a different song. Remember this, though: the lines about TV and the news and You's injury by flame are connected. I've made this comparison before: it's like newscasters after 9/11, sickened and saddened, and, here, saying "we aren't winning this one. If the newscaster is an ally, then trying to tell us all that we will lose isn't aggressive or crushing. Despair: the media is giving the cold facts of life, and Lorde can't deal with that. Seen in ruthless dictatorships or dystopias.
Oppression: the media is actively trying to crush the willpower of the people. If the newscaster is an enemy, it's either a sign of oppression or despair. There are two possibilities I see: the newscaster is an enemy of "us", presumably Lorde and You or the people as a whole, or the newscaster is an ally. It's a good bet that they're connected, but let's take a step back and talk about this line by itself. We've already had one line about TV, and here's another. The men up on the news they try to tell us all that we will lose. Actually bringing the knees closer to the body folds you into a protective position, often assumed after major trauma (either physical or mental). Folding your legs underneath you keeps the knees in the same position. If you pull your knees in, you end up in a fetal position. We ride the bus with the knees pulled in. Does this sound like a happy song?Įven if you discount the tone of the song, the later line nothing's wrong but nothing's true casts a rather ominous shadow over Lorde's claims that everything is good. This is a very hopeful and pleasant line on paper, but listen to how she sings it. I'd like to take a second to talk about tone. So now we live beside the pool, where everything is good. Whether it's fictional or nonfictional is unclear at this point, but it has something to do with what this song is about, so let's keep it in mind. Nothing in the rest of the song gives any kind of indication that the opening lines are a metaphor. If the burns are a metaphor, what could it actually be about that connects with hair loss and summer? What else could this really be referring to? The addition of it's buzzcut season anyway just compounds the point. If this is a metaphor, it's a strange and belabored one. It continues on to say it kissed your scalp and caressed your brain. Why would we assume this is a metaphor? Glory and Gore is about gladiators, so it isn't dramatically different from Ella's usual.

I know we're all waiting on the new album, but it seems 90% of the stuff on this subreddit is about Ella as a person or fluff like drawings and such.
